I wanted to share a couple of  things God has been showing me lately about my relationship and proximity to Him.

First, I recently revisited the passage in Luke where Jesus gently tells Martha that while she is worried and distracted by many things, “only one thing is necessary.”  After reading these verses, I was challenged to answer these questions,

"Do you believe that time with Jesus is better than anything else you could do with your time?"
"Do your actions reflect what you believe?"

do believe time with Jesus is better than anything else. But it’s hard, right? As humans, we have tasks, families, jobs, and responsibilities pulling at us. We can’t just sit and read the Bible or pray all day, even if our hearts long to.

So how do I reconcile my beliefs with my reality?

I try to spend intentional time in the Word each day. Some days, I get to sit and study Scripture deeply. Other days, it's listening to Annie F. Downs on the Let’s Read the Gospels podcast, or Daniah Greenberg's Proverb of the Day—and that’s all I have the capacity for. And that’s okay.

I also invite Jesus into my day in small, ongoing ways—through casual conversations with Him as I go about my routine, asking for wisdom, or simply acknowledging that He’s near. I don’t always get it right. Sometimes I slip into box-checking mode. But then He gently reminds me: just one thing is necessary. And my heart is drawn back to my true desire—closeness with Him.

Actually, I’ve got another thing on my heart, but I think I’ll sit with it a little longer. For now, focusing on just this—being near to Him—is enough.
